In the early days of mining, canaries were carried deep into the tunnels. Not for beauty. For biology. A simple creature, tuned to the unseen. Their song meant safety. Their silence? Impending doom. When the air turned toxic, the canary didn’t cry out. It went still.
Silence was the warning.
And now, in this new era of digital mining, the silence is back.
Only this time, we aren’t listening.
This week, Elon Musk casually declared that “everyone will want an Optimus.” In just a few years, his humanoid robot is designed to take over household labor, automate human function, and ease us gently into obsolescence.
Most people laugh. Or dismiss the timeline. Even the news anchor didn’t believe it.
But those of us who work in systems, strategy, and energy know something different: by the time they tell you, it’s already begun.
Tech giants have been laying off tens of thousands. Not because business is bad. Because bots are ready.
AI agents are replacing entire departments: Customer service. HR. Compliance. Writers. Designers. Coders. Analysts. Lawyers.
The next wave won’t just replace labor. It will simulate presence.
And all of it is being sold as progress. Efficiency. Safety. Freedom.
But freedom from what? From being human?
